DO YOU TRAVEL FULL TIME OR DO YOU HAVE A BASE?
As of December 2019 we are full time travellers. New Zealand will always be our home though and we plan to move back, if only for a while, in a couple of years.
HOW MUCH DOES FAMILY TRAVEL COST YOU?
One of my favourite frequently asked questions! We share our monthly family travel costs in the expenses section of TravelWorldKids. You could probably travel for a lower cost than we do, and you could definitely spend much more!
WHY DID YOU START TRAVELLING?
There are so many reasons, many I’ve talked about, and others I haven’t. Mostly it came down to both Matt and I being unhappy with our life. After our view of “we’re young and healthy and can travel later” was shattered by my tumour and Matt losing one of his best friends, we couldn’t keep living a life we weren’t in love with. One of the first blog posts I ever wrote was about why we travel full time.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP FAMILY TRAVEL TIP?
If I absolutely had to choose just one tip, it would be RELAX. Really. Many issues we’ve had during our travels have been because I am overly focused on planning every detail. I want to stick to a perfectly created schedule, and I melt down when things ‘go wrong’. The kids are calmer, better behaved, happier and therefore travelling is easier (so.much.easier) when I’m relaxed.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FAMILY FRIENDLY DESTINATION?
So far my favourite location for our family is Penang, Malaysia. Funny that, as it’s the only place we’ve been! I’m so glad we picked Malaysia, specifically Penang, as our first destination. It’s been a comfortable introduction to life in South East Asia.
HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR PICTURES?
Our iPhones double as our camera and they’re what we use to take all our photos. I have and iPhone 6 and Matt has an iPhone 8. We take photos as a way to preserve memories. We also have two little ones running around, so spending time with them (and keeping them from running off to splash in the waves alone!) is our priority. Photos are an important part of our blog, who doesn’t love a pretty picture. But we are real life, family, budget travellers, and the ‘perfect’ picture isn’t part of our reality. We also use stock photos occasionally – sometimes the weather is bad, our phones die, or we’re simply enjoying our time with E+J and we just plain forget to snap away!
HOW DO YOU EDIT YOUR PHOTOS?
The majority of our photos are edited using the tools available in the photos app on our iPhones. I also use pre-sets so each photo in a post has a similar colour ‘feel’. Photos are important, but budget is a huge factor for us at this stage of our journey. While I know Matt dreams of the day we’ll get a good quality camera and editing software, it’s not high on our priority list right now.
WHO DO YOU USE FOR TRAVEL INSURANCE?
We use World Nomads for our travel insurance. Fortunately we haven’t had the need to claim with them yet, so I cannot speak to personal experience. Before we left New Zealand I spent hours researching international insurance companies specific for travelling families. World Nomads had the best reputation and was our top choice.
IS BLOGGING YOUR JOB AND DO YOU MAKE MONEY FROM IT?
Yes, blogging is my job, and no, I don’t make money from it – yet! I’m not sure I can say it’s a job with no money coming in, but after four years of being a stay at home mum, I’m claiming it.
DO YOU EVER GET FREE TRAVEL?
This is one of the most common frequently asked questions. To date we have not received ‘free’ travel. It would be incredible to have the opportunity to do so, and one of my goals for this blog is to collaborate with companies we love. In saying that, it’s not really ‘free’ travel. You work with the company (be that a flight company, resort, experience etc.) to create content which promotes and/or reviews the business. So while the travel is ‘free’ you’re working hard for it!
DO YOU WORK LIKE, 10 HOURS A WEEK?
Isn’t that the dream! More like 10 hours a day. Getting a beautiful, functional website up and running, learning about SEO and writing posts, well, those are the easy parts And I haven’t found them easy! I knew nothing about blogging when I set up TravelWorldKids. I still know very little in the scheme of things, but I’m learning every day, which takes time. So much time! I really love it though, and am so excited to reach the point where all these hours pay off and I can work less. Though probably still more than 10 hours per week!
